Blues Progression : ------------------------------ ========= Example 1 : ========= Before making your way through these lessons, it is important to have a basic understanding of a BLUES CHORD PROGRESSION. Most blues songs follow a common sequenc of chords with each chord played for a certin ammount of bars. A blues progression is usually constructed from three basic chords in a key which are illustrated in the table below. These three chords are referred to as I, IV and V chords. The Roman numerals relating to the 1st, 4th and 5th notes of the major scale, from which each chord takes it's name. Keys ==> A A#/Bb B C C#/Db D D#/Eb E F F#/Gb G ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ========================================== I >[A] A#/Bb [B][C] C#/Db [D] D#/Eb [E][F] F#/Gb [G] ========================================== IV>[D] D#Eb [E][F] F#/Gb [G] G#/Ab [A] A#/Bb [B][C] ========================================== V>[E][F] F#/Gb [G] G#/Ab [A] A#/Bb [B][C] C#/Db[D] ========================================== Exercise 1 -------------------------------------------------- Twelve Bar Blues Progression : -------------------------------------------------- The 12 bar blues progression is the most common chord sequence used in Blues. The example consists of four bars of the I chord, two bars of the IV chord, two bars from the I chord, one of the V chord, one bar of the IV chord and two bars of the I chord. To play 'example 1' in the key of A, substitute the symbols I, IV and V with the three basic chords in the key of A (A, D and E), as shown in the table on the previous page. To play (Exercise 1), use basic chords and use the suggested rythm pattern. After playing the 12 bars, finish with one stum of the first chord (A). ======================= Strumming Rythm Pattern : 1 2 + 3 + 4 + V \/ ^ \/ ^ \/ ^ ======================= ========= Exercise 2 ; ========= To play the same progression in the key of C, substitute the symbols I, IV and V with the three basic chords in the key of C (C, F and G), as shown in the table previously. ====================== Strumming Rythm Pattern ; As above. ====================== Next lesson : Variations On The 12 Bar Blues Progression.
